1:6

Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen Denmark
June 21—August 3, 2014

A model of a vitrine built by model maker Ralf Pawlitzky is displayed alongside a short film documenting the construction process. The original structure is located in the Mineral Hall of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin displaying samples from the mineral collection. Traced on site and translated into two-dimensional drawings, the vitrine was then reproduced with detailed hand work in 1:6 scale. Here, it stands empty, itself a crystallization of labour, western taxonomies and systems of knowledge. During the development of the work, James Bae entered into a discussion with Iwama, based on which he wrote the six accompanying lines, a fictionalised dialogue of sorts.

1:6 prefaces techne, n., opening the discourse on the conceptual ideas researched in the exhibition.
